An overview of the evidence base for water fluoridation, the why and how to engage with the public consultation.

Aims

To raise awareness of community water fluoridation as an effective public health measure

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to

  • Understand the evidence base
  • Be aware of the oral health need and potential impact of CWF on oral health in the NE 
  • Be aware of the public consultation and how everyone can participate
  • Understand how dental team members can advocate for fluoridation and what unified messages we can use

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the learner will gain an understanding of how to:

  • Interpret the evidence base supporting community water fluoridation (CWF) as an effective public health measure.
  • Recognise the oral health needs and potential impact of CWF on oral health specifically in the NE region.
  • Engage in the public consultation process and actively participate in advocating for CWF initiatives.
  • Collaborate with dental team members to effectively advocate for CWF, utilising unified messages to communicate the benefits of fluoridation.

Alan Johnson

Alan Johnson is a British politician who served as Secretary of State for Education and Skills from 2006 to 2007, Secretary of State for Health from 2007 to 2009, Home Secretary from 2009 to 2010, and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2011. A member of the Labour Party, he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle from 1997 to 2017.[1]

Johnson served in the Cabinet during both the Tony Blair government and that of Gordon Brown. He served under Blair as Minister of State for Universities from 2003 to 2004, as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from 2004 to 2005, and as President of the Board of Trade from 2005 to 2006.

Simon qualified a professional life-time ago and worked mainly in general practice in the north of England with an interest in prevention.

He has been involved in vocational training since 1992 mainly as a trainer and latterly as a TPD.

Simon is the coordiantor of the national community water fluoridation network raising the profile of the public health measure and campaigning for targeted implementation to reduce inequalities.

Simon has chaired the Local Dental Network for North Yorkshire & Humber since 2017 and has been a champion of flexible commissioniong as a method of targeting commissioing resource at oral health need, developing skill-mix delivery of care and moving away from activity based care-models.

Deputy Chief Dental Officer for England

Jason Wong MBE is a General Dental practitioner who qualified from University of Birmingham in 1995. He is a partner at the 12 surgery Maltings Dental practice in Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Jason is currently Deputy Chief Dental officer for England. He was a Local Dental Network Chair for NHS England & NHS Improvement in the Midlands covering Leicestershire Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. He has held a range of positions including chairing the Local Dental Network for Hertfordshire and South Midlands and the West Midlands as well as secretary of Lincolnshire Local Dental committee for 16 years.

Jason has clinical interests in the treatment of anxious patients, Oral surgery and Implant Dentistry. He also has an interest in prevention and oral health promotion and was part of several Oral health alliance and boards across the region. He is a well known speaker nationally on clinical and non clinical topics. He was awarded a MBE for services to Dentistry and Oral health in the new year honours list 2020

Secretary of the British Fluoridation Society

Ray Lowry, a qualified doctor and dentist, completed formal training in public health and became an NHS consultant in 1990. Until he retired in 2010 he was a senior lecturer in dental public health at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He was on the specialist registers for medical and dental public health and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health. He has published over 50 articles in the learned press. He was the training director for public health in the Northern Region and  an examiner for the Faculty of Public Health. He is secretary of the British Fluoridation Society.

Associate Clinical Professor (Consultant) in Dental Public Health

John Morris is Associate Professor and consultant in dental public health with the School of Dentistry at The University of Birmingham.  John has previously been the lead consultant for water fluoridation with Public Health England and the regional consultant for NHS Midlands and East of England.  He is chair of examiners for the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship examination in dental public health.  John is also a part-time general dental practitioner and teaches operative dentistry.
