Mentoring in Implant Dentistry has significantly changed over the decades. From what was a informal relationship between two clinicians, often one more experienced than the other, to now an established and recognised format.

This webinar will help both mentors and mentees in Implant Dentistry understand what the new guidelines are and why they were developed and provide a insight into what is expected from each other during the mentoring process.

Abhi Pal FCGDent

Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice UK (FGDP) and President of the College of General Dentistry (CGDent)

Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice UK (FGDP), and first elected President of the College of General Dentistry.

Dr Pal qualified in 1987 with honours and distinction from Guy’s Hospital, London, and has worked in general dental practice ever since, joining The University Dental and Implant Centre, a mixed NHS and private practice in Edgbaston of which he is Principal, in 1991.

With special interests in dental implantology and restorative dentistry, Dr Pal is Editor of FGDP's Training standards in implant dentistry, for which he is currently leading the development of mentoring requirements.

He joined FGDP in 1997, becoming active in its West Midlands division as a tutor and examiner for the MJDF, and later being awarded the Diploma of Fellowship. He was elected to represent the region on the National Faculty Board in 2014, was re-elected in 2017 and 2020, and is Chair of the FGDP Professional Affairs Committee.

He has also previously served the Faculty as Chair of both the Education and Finance Committees, as Junior Vice-Dean (2016-17) and Senior Vice-Dean (2019-20), and as its representative on the Health Education England dental advisory group and NHS England clinical reference group on record-keeping standards.

He is one of the authors of the FGDP-CGDent guidance, Implications of COVID-19 for the safe management of general dental practice, and has played a leading role in developing the Faculty's international relationships.

Specialist Prosthodontist

Charlotte Stilwell is a specialist prosthodontist in private practice in Harley Street, London. She trained at the Royal Dental College in Copenhagen, Denmark followed by post-graduate training and part-time lecturer post at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Charlotte Stilwell is currently international president of the ITI International Team for Implantology, senior lecturer at University Clinic of Dentistry, Geneva and an examiner for the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Charlotte is also a co-founder and core group member of WIN Women Implantology Network.

Dental Surgeon, Advanced Restorative Dentistry and Complex Dental Implants

Dr George is a dentist providing advanced oral surgery, restorative dentistry and dental implants. He is a graduate of Liverpool Dental School and has completed several postgraduate qualifications including the Membership exams from the Royal College of Surgeons, a Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s Degree in Restorative Dentistry from the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute, UCL and a separate Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s degree in Dental Implants from Warwick University. More recently he obtained his Clinical Doctorate in Oral Surgery from the University of Edinburgh.

Currently, he lectures nationally and internationally as well as working in a hospital setting teaching postgraduate and specialist trainees.

His scope of practice is limited to dental implants which involve simple single implants and advanced bone grafting to complex cases involving full mouth work involving zygomatic and pterygoid implants.

He is currently the Treasurer for the Association of Dental Implantology.

Specialist Oral Surgeon

Having graduated from Kings College London Dental Institute in 2009 Sami worked across primary care and Maxillofacial Surgery House jobs in the South of England before taking on specialty training in Oral Surgery. 

 As a specialist he currently manages and provides NHS Oral Surgery across the Wessex region and is one of the few UK graduates to have held an ITI scholarship where he spent a year in Graz Austria with the Oral Surgery and Implant team expanding his Implantology skillset.

 He holds Memberships with the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and England as well as the Faculty of General Dentistry.  Sami has completed an MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry and was awarded one of the first recognised UK Fellowships in Clinical Leadership with Health Education England. Furthermore, he is an active member of many societies and represents the profession with the British Dental Association and at the Royal Society of Medicine as well as acting as a Key Opinion Leader to several companies within the industry.
