This webinar aims to raise awareness of whistleblowing and to discuss what our obligations are as dental professionals.
The speakers will discuss scenarios showing how to identify unethical behaviour and when and how to raise concerns.
They will also explore where to go for support and advice, and what legal protections there are available for whistleblowers.
Understand the role of whistleblowing in maintaining dental ethics and patient safety.
Explore the legal protections for whistleblowers in the UK, including PIDA.
Identify potential whistleblowing situations and how to report these, including how to promote local resolution in dental practice.
Promote and actively participate in a culture that supports whistleblowing to promote ethical behaviour and patient safety.
Objectives

Fiona has been a GDC registrant for many years as a dental nurse and has a range of roles and responsibilities across the dental landscape. Fiona holds External Examiner posts at two Universities, is a member of the BDJ Editorial Team and the past Chair of National Oral Health Promotion Group. Fiona currently holds a subject expert post at the University of Bangor and works as an associate for the GDC in the capacity of an Education Associate and as a Registration panel member. Fiona is a founder of the Society of British Dental Nurses and of the International Federation Dental Assistants and Nurses and co-ordinates the Global Coalition for Dental Nurses & Assistants Oral health panel. She holds a number of appointments, Trustee at Dentaid and support the Mouth Cancer Foundation education arm. In addition to this she is a member of the National Human Factors for Dentistry Advisory Board and Dental Professional Alliance and was involved in the SDCEP work during the pandemic and contributed towards the Equality Diversity & Inclusion in Dentistry work. More recently Fiona has held the post of co-investigator as part of an NIHR research project and has co-chaired the Mental Health in Wellness strategic group. Fiona felt it was a great honour to take up the post of (Honorary) Vice Chair for BSDHT and be awarded a Queen's honour.
George graduated with honours from the University of Sheffield and after completion of Foundation Training, moved into general practice working in the NHS. George joined Dental Protection in 2016 as an Associate Dentolegal Adviser sharing his time with working in general practice where he was appointed Foundation Trainer with the South Yorkshire Deanery. In September 2018, George took up a full-time position with Dental Protection as a Dentolegal Consultant and in April 2020 was appointed Senior Medical Educator in Risk Prevention. Having a keen interest in Dental Education, George was the Training Programme Director for the Performer List Validation by Experience Programme in Yorkshire and the Humber until the end of 2018.
As a former GDP representative on the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Dental Local Professional Network Steering Group, George has experience in contributing to working groups for procurement of the Community Dental Services and Access to Primary Dental Care. George was Deputy Chairman of the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Local Dental Committee and held responsibility for events in the region. In 2015 he was appointed Postgraduate Dental Tutor with Health Education England working across Yorkshire and the Humber, a role which he stood down from in 2018. George is a past President of the South Yorkshire Branch of the BDA and former Chairman of the BDA’s Associate Group. In 2019 he stood down from his roles on the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee and the Dental Clinical Commissioning Executive with NHS England Yorkshire and the Humber to focus on his work at Dental Protection.
Recently appointed Deputy Dental Director at Dental Protection, George continues to work as a general dental practitioner in private practice, is the past Chief Examiner as the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and is a Magistrate in the Adult Criminal Court.
