This webinar, in collaboration with the College of General Dentistry, discusses the legal, ethical, and clinical responsibilities in dental implant dentistry. Participants will gain essential knowledge on consent, risk management, record-keeping, and regulatory compliance to ensure safe and effective patient care while minimising legal risks.

Aims

This webinar aims to provide dental professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the legal, ethical, and clinical considerations involved in dental implant treatment. 

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to: 

  1. Understand the Legal Framework – Recognise key regulations, legal principles, and professional responsibilities in implant dentistry. 
  2. Improve Diagnosis & Treatment Planning – Conduct thorough assessments, create clear treatment plans, and manage patient expectations. 
  3. Identify High-Risk Cases – Spot red flags, assess case complexity, and document risks effectively. 
  4. Ensure Proper Consent – Differentiate between informed consent and sales tactics, and follow best practices for patient communication. 
  5. Manage Implant-Specific Risks – Clarify responsibilities in shared-care cases, ensure proper indemnity, and maintain detailed records. 
  6. Enhance Record-Keeping – Accurately document treatment, consent, complications, and follow-up care. 
  7. Reduce Legal Risk – Set clear expectations, follow structured consent processes, and handle complaints effectively.

Independent Dental Adviser

Stephen qualified in London in 1984 and obtained a master’s degree in medical law (LLM) in Cardiff in 2005. After working in hospital practice, he went into practice in Oxford where he still works as a visiting specialist in oral surgery. He has had 25 years experience working as a dento-legal adviser and is currently working as an independent dental adviser, consulting with a number of organisations and mentoring dentists in difficulty with the GDC. He writes a monthly blog for GDPUK and lectures on medico-legal aspects of dentistry.
