Join us for this interactive live webinar where we will look at the effective use of skill-mix in primary dental care for Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists.

This webinar will introduce the free to access, on-demand training package to support Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists working within the dental team, who decide to implement the contract skill-mix changes.

This training has been commissioned by W.T.E Yorkshire and Humber and will cover three main areas:

  • Examination and assessment
  • NHS regulations
  • Opening and submitting a course of treatment

Learning Outcomes

Aims

  • To be aware of the Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists training package
  • To understand the whole team approach to Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists working in this way within the dental team
  • To be able to access the training and consider next steps in terms of working within the dental team opening and submitting courses of NHS care.

Objectives

On completion of this webinar, you will understand the whole team approach to support Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists working within the dental team, implementing the contract skill-mix changes, and be aware of the available training package.

Training Programme Director, Learner Support and Faculty Development, Yorkshire and the Humber

Simon qualified a professional life-time ago and worked mainly in general practice in the north of England with an interest in prevention.

He has been involved in vocational training since 1992 mainly as a trainer and latterly as a TPD.

Simon is the coordiantor of the national community water fluoridation network raising the profile of the public health measure and campaigning for targeted implementation to reduce inequalities.

Simon has chaired the Local Dental Network for North Yorkshire & Humber since 2017 and has been a champion of flexible commissioniong as a method of targeting commissioing resource at oral health need, developing skill-mix delivery of care and moving away from activity based care-models.

Dental Therapist and Dental Educator

Fiona qualified as a Dental Hygienist from Manchester Dental Hospital in 1993 and as a Dental Therapist in 1999 from Liverpool University Dental Hospital and in 2013 gained her in Medical Education from Cardiff University. She currently works part-time in a busy NHS Practice, as DPSU Lead and North Wales Reginal Lead for Health Education and Improvement Wales. She is an Education Associate for the GDC and an Examiner for the RCS Edinburgh and a past President of the British Association of Dental Therapists. She has been fortunate to work as dental therapist in practice, in hospital, the community dental service and in personal dental service and has an interest in treating anxious patients with Inhalation Sedation. She has been awarded two Oral and Dental Research Trust DCP Awards, in 2013 and 2015. She is currently carrying out Health Service Research at Bangor University for her PhD and working on the proposal for the use of exemptions in medicines legislation by dental hygienists and dental therapists across the United Kingdom and Chair of the British Association of Dental Therapists.

Fiona is a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry and Fellow of the Dental Trainers Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, Fellow of the College of General Dentistry and sits on the “Dental Update Editorial Board”

Dental Therapist and Hygienist in Hastings, Eastbourne, and Hailsham. President of BSDHT

Miranda qualified as a dental hygienist and dental therapist from the University from Leeds in 2009 having previously worked as a dental nurse. She had not been a very active member of the south east regional group when she saw a call out for a new treasurer and in September 2014, was voted onto the regional group committee.

In 2018, she was invited to step up for the role of Honorary Treasurer on the Executive Committee which was a role she enjoyed for 2 years, while also taking on the responsibility of a Directorship and assisting with the formation of the Mentorship programme.

Alongside this role, Miranda completed her studies for a MSc at the University of Kent, successfully finishing with a merit grade in 2020. She also enjoys musical theatre, both performing on stage and watching shows, going to live music concerts, relaxing with weekly Pilates classes and cheering on her beloved (Brighton and Hove Albion FC) Seagulls!

At the AGM in 2020, she was ratified into the position of President Elect, a fresh new challenge that she cannot wait to get her teeth into.

Dental Hygienist & Oral Health Practitioner

Frances is a Dental Hygienist currently working in London in private practice and as an Oral Health Practitioner in NHS community outreach. With a Masters in Dental Public Health from UCL Frances' further interests lie in oral health promotion and preventative oral health care.  

Having volunteered in Nepal, India, Cambodia, in a refugee camp in Greece, and in 2022 in Panama, she is an experienced volunteer for various dental and medical charities. Often working with marginalised, indigenous and refugee communities in very isolated areas with minimal resources she considers it her lifelong ambition to help improve global oral health. Frances is a volunteer officer for Dental Mavericks and is currently leading a project for the training of local healthcare workers. She will travel with Dental Mavericks to Morocco in 2023. 

Frances is the Vice Chair of the Inaugural Board of the Faculty of Dental Hygiene and Therapy and the Chair of the working group of the Careers Pathway for Dental Hygienists and Therapists at the CGDent.

Maddie is a motivated Dental Therapist with 30 years of dental profession experience. 


She is a dental hygiene and therapy tutor at Queen Mary's university of London, a member of the Oral Health Steering Group, and Dental Industry key opinion leader and speaker.

Maddie is a British Association of Dental Therapists Industry liaison representative and national conference team member along with being a Maasai Molar dental charity trustee and volunteer.

Maddie is an ambassador for EMS IMEA ​Guided Biofilm Therapy and trainer for Skillian Healthcare.​

Maddie is currently taking a diploma level 7 in Transformational Health Coaching and the Prince 2 foundation certificate.

Professor / Deputy Chief Dental Officer for England/ Honorary Consultant Dental Public Health

Professor Harris qualified in Dentistry from Bristol University, and then moved between clinical roles (including Clinical Director of Salaried Services in South Glamorgan) and academia (Kings College London), before joining the University of Liverpool where I am now Professor and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health.
