Past President Mouth Cancer Foundation
Philip Lewis MBE 1953- 2024.
Philip had an interest in the early detection of mouth cancer for many years and remained heavily involved with the subject. In 2013, he was appointed an Ambassador for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and became its President in 2020.
He had a special interest in raising public awareness of the subject and promoting self-examination, which was especially important during times when access to dental appointments was limited.
Philip always took a keen interest in postgraduate education and the development of dentistry. In addition to writing and lecturing on mouth cancer, he served on the Editorial Advisory Board of several dental magazines and received awards for his commitment to postgraduate education.
He regularly wrote for the dental press and lectured to dental professionals on a variety of clinical and practice management topics, as well as giving talks on dental-related subjects to groups of the general public.
In addition, Philip was a long-serving member of the British Dental Association and acted as a media spokesperson.
Philip Lewis ran a single-handed practice on the Isle of Wight. His wife Joy acted as receptionist and practice manager, and his daughters Chloe and Sarah were both qualified dental nurses.
Outside of dentistry, Philip took an interest in music, drama, and travel.
