Like history taking, examination necessitates a systematic approach. As a general rule, use your eyes  first, then your hands to examine a patient, Start with the extra-oral examination before proceeding to examine the oral cavity.

Aims

This course aims to provide learners with knowledge and understanding of the best practice to perform a comprehensive examination for a patient prior to any oral surgery procedure, including any special investigations and if required a referral letter to a specialist provider.

Objectives

  • To understand the general, intra-oral and extra-oral areas that should routinely be checked prior to any oral surgery procedure.
  • To recognise the medico-legal importance of any laboratory investigation.
  • To be aware of the acceptable information required for a referral letter to a second clinician.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module you will be aware of the best practice to perform a comprehensive examination for a patient prior to any oral surgery procedure, including any special investigations and if required a referral letter to a specialist provider.
