Dr Yoseph Mamo Azmera

Dr Yoseph Mamo Azmera is a physician working in Ethiopia. He qualified as a medical doctor (MD) in 1990, with three years of additional training in Internal Medicine from Addis Ababa University and licensed to practice general internal medicine. He also participated in a year-long fellowship programme in palliative care at the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kozhikode, India.

After qualification, Dr Azmera began working as a general practitioner and later as a resident until 1999. Between 1999 and 2006 he was an associate professor in medicine at Jimma University Medical School. He has experience in training medical students and residents and researched community-based chronic illness care, as well as HIV/AIDS care programme management.

Dr Azmera has published and presented several community-based types of research, qualifying for an associate professorship at Jimma University Medical School in 2004 and has to date been credited with 32 public health related publications. Dr Azmera worked with the University of California San Diego’s Ethiopian HIV programme, as a Medical advisor and later as an associate director of care and treatment (July 2006-July 2013). He was part of the national effort that designed the first national in-service training modules for palliative care and the National Pain Management guideline. He coordinated the first in-country formulation of Morphine syrup, helping open new opportunities for availability and access to opioids for pain management in Ethiopia. 

Between October 2013-2016 Dr Azmera worked for the Tropical Health Education Trust ( THET) as an advisor for chronic non-communicable ( NCD) disease care and treatment programmes for the Ministry of Health. Since January 2019 Dr Azmera has been leading THET NCD support to the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia.
