Dr Wendy Thompson

Dr Wendy Thompson is an academic dentist working in the northwest of England. She is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Primary Dental Care based at University of Manchester and works part-time as a GDP at {my}dentist in Cumbria. Wendy has completed a PhD about understanding dentist’s antibiotic prescribing behaviours for adults with acute dental conditions and has used that insight to develop new tools for addition to the UK dental antimicrobial stewardship toolkit.

Wendy is the lead author of the FDI World Dental Federation’s white paper on tackling antibiotic resistance and has been their lead educator for a new MOOC in collaboration with the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. Wendy also delivers continuing professional development on dental antimicrobial prescribing, resistance and stewardship for dental and medical team on behalf of Health Education England. Wendy is a member of the BDA Health & Science Committee, BNF Dental Advisory Group and a NICE specialist advisor on antibiotic prescribing and stewardship in dentistry. She is also co-chair of the Society for Academic Primary Care’s dental subgroup.

Having graduated in 1994 from the University of Warwick with a degree in microbiology and microbial technology, Wendy worked initially as a scientist in Whitehall. In 2012, she gained BDS with honours and a distinction in oral health from the University of Liverpool (taught at UCLAN) followed short thereafter by MJDF.
