In this blog Fiona Ellwood would like to open minds and eyes to help you on your journey.
Registration for dental nurses was pivotal in changing the landscape for us; the scope of practice for dental nurses was clearly outlined and a wide range of skills identified that can be carried out with further training, qualifications and continuous demonstration of competence.
What does that mean?
- Further training – Appropriate training to obtain a skill that doesn’t require the taking of a qualification.
- Qualifications - In terms of Scope of Practice, a requirement in order to undertake the specific activity.
- Competence – Once skills are acquired they must be maintained.
Do you know what is out there for you? Remember this is no longer about collecting pieces of paper, but pursuing a meaningful career.
A dental nurse who has a passion for implantology and is working in a predominantly implant clinic would not benefit from say an orthodontic qualification. A better fit would be to consider: Dental photography, impression taking, shade taking, application of topical anaesthetic, radiography, casting of study models and treatment coordination.
So are you on the right journey for your future career?
