P218 'Quick' Orthodontic Systems - Risks, Benefits and Consent

In collaboration with BOS (British Orthodontic Society)

This is the third webinar in a series of five designed for General Dental Practitioners, but especially suitable for recently qualified dentists and those new to working in UK general practice.

The course will boost your skills in orthodontic diagnosis and referral. It will also demonstrate what orthodontics can offer you and your patients, by providing you with an overview of the scope of contemporary orthodontic treatment, including ‘quick’ orthodontic systems.

Presented by Alison Williams

This webinar will cover the dento-legal issues that commonly arise during orthodontic treatment. There will be a particular emphasis on the problems that arise during the orthodontic treatment of adults using short-term ('quick') branded orthodontic systems, aimed at just improving the alignment of the anterior teeth.

These systems have been developed for use by GDPs with a minimum of training. Unfortunately, this can leave a GDP particularly vulnerable to an accusation that they had insufficient knowledge, training and experience to undertake the treatment, if a patient makes a complaint.

Tips will be provided about the steps that a dental Registrant should take to reduce the risk of receiving a successful complaint from an orthodontic patient. There will be a particular emphasis on record-keeping and the issues that should be covered when gaining informed consent from an adult orthodontic patient.
